I have learned more about my usual travel-interests, History - Architecture - Art. But also have felt more of a connection with real-Life amongst the Portuguese and Spanish-people, even with the language-barriers ;-).

And have added a whole new element to any of my-travels, the enjoyment and exploration of Gastronomy :-).

================================================================================

My-biggest impressions of Portugal are, the 5-reals!!

RealLife+RealSimplicity+RealStruggles+RealWarmth+RealSadness.

Here comes a test, for anyone who reads the blog, to pronounce this statement in Portuguese:
>"Proxima paragem....Lisboa, estacao Santa Apolonia."

================================================================================

And as for Espana (said in a very-deep voice), after 4-weeks moving my way from North to South. It's a land of great-contradictions.

Most people in-Spain are very athletic, but yet they smoke like chimneys?!
They speed like maniacs, but have mastered/invented the Paseo?!
Their cooking is plain/fridura, but has some amazingly spicy-moments?!

Most of all they have accomplished much as a Country, but still they are a collection of distinct&diverse-regions?!

And now the test for Espanol.
>"Atencion....AVE, destino Madrid....Puerta de Atocha."

Adeus/Adios :-(

Onto, La Sagrada Familia started by Gaudi, under-construction for 125-years, all by donation!! A monstrosity, that will be twice as-tall when done, there are real-fears it could be damaged by the high-speed rail-lines underneath :-(.

“The only conqueror is God”,

Basically this day is devoted to exploring Madinat Al-Hamra, the Alhambra. A massive-complex constructed over several-centuries, by the Moorish-people of Spain. A more wonderful-place I have never seen, at least in the daylight this time.

dscn1328.jpg

dscn1330.jpg

I started of walking thru the complex, to Generalife-gardens. The use of natural-space/plants/buildings/and agua, is amazing!!

dscn1434.jpg

dscn1338.jpg

dscn1340.jpg

dscn1346.jpg

dscn1356.jpg

dscn1360.jpg

dscn1363.jpg

Then a walk back-thru El Secano, the former-Medina of the city, there is not much left from Moorish-times.

dscn1329.jpg

dscn1331.jpg

dscn1371.jpg

A quick visit to Palacio de Carlos V, constructed many years after the Reconquista.

dscn1374.jpg

dscn1380.jpg

Marched up&into the fortress-citadel of Alcazaba, parts of which were the first thing built on this hill.

dscn1376.jpg

dscn1382.jpg

dscn1389.jpg

And onto the grandest-portion of the Alhambra, Los Palacios Nazaries!!!!

dscn1385.jpg

Starting with Mexur.

dscn1393.jpg

dscn1398.jpg

Then, the middle-one Comares.

dscn1399.jpg

dscn1403.jpg

dscn1406.jpg

dscn1413.jpg

And finally the most famous-one, Patio de los Leones.

dscn1415.jpg

dscn1416.jpg

dscn1417.jpg

dscn1421.jpg

dscn1422.jpg

As an after-thought there was the Partal, a garden area along the walls.

dscn1424.jpg

dscn1426.jpg

Though the shadows of these walls have long since gone, the memory of them will live on as the final refuge of dreams and art. And then the last nightingale to breath on this earth will build its nest and sings its farewall song among the glorious ruins of the Alhambra....F Villaespesa

dscn1435.jpg

After that a walk-down a trecherous-trail, and then much needed agua/sangria and gazpacho ;-).

dscn1438.jpg

dscn1439.jpg

My last sites of the day, before heading to the train-station. Were Catedral de Granada, a very-unusual place, and Capilla Real, where Isabella&Ferdinand are buried, she's the Queen whom gave Columbus his money to go explore ;-).

dscn1446.jpg

dscn1442.jpg

Renfe TrenHotel destino Barcelona....Buenas-Noches!!

dscn1321.jpg

And finally a true picture of me, hope this makes WendyB happy LOL.

dscn1316.jpg

The hotel is like a mini-concert hall, I even attended a free-one tonight :-). Good thing I have 3-full days here, as I am in city-shock LOL.

Belleza y Carniceria :-( tag:travellerspoint.com,2009-05-21:/blog/?domain=bojangles&thisblog_entryid=29&entryid=161953 2009-06-16T18:33:56Z 2009-05-22T07:41:43Z Had a very emotional day, visited the old part of Cordoba, mostly the Mezquita, the former grand-Mosque. My first real introduction to the Moorish-legacy in Spain, It's a grand-place there is no doubt. But after the Reconquista took Cordoba from the Moors, in celebration the victors wanted to demolish the Mosque and build a Church, thank GOD the King only allowed them to install a Church, as he could not bring himself to let this place be destroyed. But the half-butchery of the place is very upsetting, you can see the way the Moors had built to embrace-nature with water&light, and how this was covered with the trappings of the Catholic-Church, it's sad as Mass-started, it echoed in the forest of pillars :-(.

dscn0912.jpg

dscn0903.jpg

After regrouping I walked further around La Juderia, the former Jewish quarter, also upsetting that after 700-years of Moorish-rule, they too suffered after the Reconquista, and underwent the Diaspora, or dispersal of there culture&life :-(.

dscn0893.jpg

dscn0925.jpg

Then to lighten my mood I wandered around San Basilio, and it's amazing tableau of private-Patio's ;-).

The afternoon/evening was a wash-out, am feeling very-ill, the heat is like a blast-furnace, well over 34+. So did some laundry, got some fruit&liquids, and cranked up the air conditioning, and went to sleep!!!!

One slight miscalculation, a lot of Spanish-people are chain-smokers, and I should have guessed that applied to bars/clubs, so the first one I went into, I had to leave in seconds, as my eyes were on fire :-(.

So instead I had one long enjoyable Paseo, with mama&papa, ninos/ninas and after 10-pm hookers&etc ROMALOL!!

Tonight I went to Plaza Mayor here in Madrid to watch some Zarazuela, or light-opera, and I am hooked on "Gazpacho", the cold-tomato-garlic soup, and sangria, but not tapas or paella :-)
